Co-Writing
Frequently asked questions
About Co-Writing
What exactly happens in a co-writing session?
Each session starts with a casual chat about what everyone wants to create. Then we dive into writing - sometimes starting from scratch, sometimes developing someone's existing idea. We keep things relaxed but focused, helping you explore new creative directions while developing your craft.
Do I need to be an experienced songwriter?
Not at all! We welcome writers at all levels who are serious about developing their craft. What matters most is your openness to collaboration and willingness to contribute ideas.
What if I'm nervous about sharing my ideas?
That's completely normal! We create a supportive environment where everyone's contributions are valued. Start with a workshop session if you want to get comfortable with the process before diving into paired writing.
Practical Details
How long are the sessions?
Most sessions run about 3 hours. We've found this gives enough space to create while keeping energy fresh.
What should I bring?
Just bring your instrument if you play one, and any notes or song ideas you'd like to work on. We provide the space, notebooks, and good coffee.
Where do sessions happen?
All sessions take place at Free River Studios in Livingston, MT. The space is comfortable and relaxed - perfect for creative work.
The Process
How do you match writers for paired sessions?
We consider musical style, experience level, and creative goals to create partnerships where both writers can contribute and grow. We also get to know each writer's working style to ensure good chemistry.
What happens after we write a song?
You'll get a simple demo recording and clear documentation of song ownership. If you want to develop the song further, we can help connect you with recording opportunities.
Can I write with someone specific?
If you know another writer you'd like to work with, let us know in your application. We're happy to facilitate those connections when both writers are interested.
Getting Started
How long does the application process take?
We review applications weekly and typically respond within 7 days. If we think there's a good fit, we'll schedule a short chat to discuss next steps.
What if I'm not sure co-writing is for me?
Come to a Homegrown Session! It's a great way to meet our community and get a feel for how we work. You can also schedule a visit to see the space and ask questions.
How often can I participate?
We try to give everyone who's interested a chance to participate. Frequency depends on the type of session and overall community interest, but most writers join us every few months.
